UK Food Security - Solutions to a potential existential threat by 2016
The UK imports most of its food supply, either directly or indirectly through fertiliser imports. A combination of factors including North Sea oil and gas depletion, national debt, import dependencies, trade deficits and international shortages in energy, food and fertiliser will create significant challenges for UK food security by 2016.
This
article lists solutions which, if acted on immediately have the
potential to significantly mitigate the problem and create significant
investment opportunities. The solutions suggested include the stock
piling of fertilizer and the domestic production of fertiliser. Also
discussed is the use of renewable energy in the production of nitrogen
fertiliser.
